Abstract :
Two impressive road tunnels are being opened to traffic in Switzerland in 1980: the Gotthard tunnel (16.8 km) and the Seelisberg tunnel (9.25 km). The two tunnels are the very heart of N2 national highway. Thus, the most important northsouth link in Switzerland becomes wintersafe for motor vehicles, and, additionally, the Lucerne-Airolo route is reduced from 115 km to 86 km (see map). Obviously, the Gotthard route has European significance because it constitutes the shortest link between the densely populated northern regions and Italy.
