Abstract
The paper describes a method for adding a packet mobile data service to a wide-area radiotelephone voice system, to utilize radio channel time, even under busy hour conditions, that is not readily usable for voice calls because of grade of service considerations. The distributed radiotelephone control terminals, normally regarded as voice path switches between radio channels and telephone trunks, additionally serve as data control interfaces between radio channels and the Canda-wide Datapac packet switched digitial network. The digital signalling protocol used on the radio path for setting up voice calls and passing data is described. The results of a computer simulation, showing the effect on call processing delays for both types of traffic when data is added to a voice service, are also presented.
