  • Abstract
Measurements are reported on the influence of electric fields on the viscoelastic shear moduli of polyethylene films using a sensitive quartz crystal sensor technique. Marked effects are found that are attributed to field-induced conformational changes in the amorphous phase of the polymer. The change begins at fields as low as 1×107 Vm-1 but particularly striking changes in the moduli appear when the field exceeds 5×107 Vm-1. The storage modulus in some samples falls to low and even negative values, indicative of negative stiffness and likely instabilities in the polymer.
