Abstract :
The study of a data relay satellite which will be used for linking low-earth-orbiting (LEO) satellites with fixed earth terminals is presented. The authors describe the antenna subsystems presently based on large scannable reflector antennas for the interorbit links at S- (2 GHz) and Ka-bands (23/26 GHz) and on a fixed reconfigurable antenna for the feeder link with the earth stations located in Europe. Feasibility studies have been conducted in order to accommodate the antenna on different European spacecraft within the Ariane IV launcher constraints. A novel scanning technique is described which makes it possible to steer the reflector for up to 40 HPBWs with a loss of about 1 dB.<>
