Abstract :
This paper introduces the work of invention of Lightning Recording System (LRS) and the locating method of lightning stroke point on 500kV AC transmission lines with LRS. The LRS is designed to record the waveform of lightning current on the grounding line and send the data to the station via General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). With the division of current across multiple paths at the tower junction while spreading along the wire, the current on the grounding line at each tower is different. The position of lightning stroke point can be estimated by contrasting the value of current peak on the grounding line recorded by LRS sensors on different towers or analyzing the front time of the recorded waveform.
