Abstract
While investigating the effects of accumulation of charges on insulating surfaces in gas-insulated apparatus, it was observed that the flashover paths deviated from the surface of the spacer. In the present work, it is shown that the observed paths are consistent with the computed electric field patterns in the presence of charges on the spacer surfaces. The results reported were obtained with hemispherically capped rod electrodes of diameters varying between 3.2 mm and 10 mm and cylindrical spacers of 40-mm diameter and 30-mm height subjected to lightning impulses. Surface charges were measured in situ using electrostatic probes
