Abstract
This paper traces briefly early railway history, continuing with a discussion of capacity as one of the most intractable of the present problems. It examines timetabling as a function of railway operation and how this is can be carried out effectively to the benefit of all concerned. Suggestions are then made as to what operators are looking for, and how this can be aligned with the needs of customers and the industry alike.
