  • Abstract
Assigning carrier frequencies for radio ports (base-stations) in a multistorey building environment is an important function for the operation of personal portable communications. It is pointed out that coordinating radio frequencies in this environment based on a centralized assignment method is difficult enough in a building served by only one provider, but it becomes impractical when many providers are present to serve different buildings. It is shown that a simple autonomous procedure performed by each port to determine its own carrier frequencies can achieve frequency coordination for the entire system. This self-organizing assignment method results in improvement of frequency reuse while maintaining signal quality by using a measurement-based procedure to adapt to the variations in the propagation environment. Application of this method to a system using TDMA (time division multiple access) architecture is considered, and performance results obtained from computer simulations are presented
