  • Abstract
A next-generation transmission system network which emerges after SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) based networks is described. The application of three kinds of elemental technologies, fiber optics, ATM, (asynchronous transfer mode), and OAM (operation, administration, and maintenance), in the network is considered. This network has flexibility equal to B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) services and high reliability with sophisticated OAM ability. Several features, such as a layered network structure relating to the path hierarchy, optical path and optical cross-connect concepts, and simple interface, are clarified. A possible network configuration is also presented
