Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows.As part of the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI), a number of single-pitch mini helical flux compression generators have been designed, constructed and tested by Texas Tech University and the University of Missouri-Rolla. A number of other Institutions have also co-operated in the program, by providing theoretical predictions of the output performance of the generator, without any access to the experimental data and consequent parameter modification in the numerical code. Using their extensively documented and well-proven 2-dimensional filamentary approach, the Pulsed Power Group at Loughborough University, UK has completed a detailed consideration of the generator characteristics. Typical simulated results for priming currents of 7 kA and 8 kA predict output currents rising respectively to 260 kA and 290 kA, and compare closely with the experimentally obtained output current of 285 kA for 8 kA priming current available on the Internet. The paper will detail a number of the most important aspects of the numerical simulation and the most significant findings that were obtained.
