Abstract :
A double star architecture of a BISDN (broadband integrated services digital network), based on both single-mode fiber and digital radio relay systems, is suggested. At the SLS (second-level star), to link subscribers to the remote electronics, an extensive user of broadband local radio systems could be made. Such a mixed solution provides an immediate response to the last-mile distribution problem, allowing a flexible arrangement of the SLS network without the constraints deriving from fiber-optic link installation in a metropolitan area. The primary benefits obtained from the suggested solution are flexibility, economy, and immediate availability in the last mile connection. The principal parameters of the new radio systems and an arrangement of radio channels at the 40 GHz band are also suggested. In addition, the authors describe an experimental system designed to collect data on the radio link performance
