Abstract :
This paper describes a model to estimate the depolarisation due to ice crystals. The theoretical model is compared with results of measurements performed in Italy using the OLYMPUS and ITALSAT satellites. According to the model, the total ice content is the required parameter to be determined for estimation of the depolarisation. The results of analysis of meteorological database and measurements of the OLYMPUS and ITALSAT beacons, that describe the total amount of ice over Europe and the relationship between rain rate and ice total content, are presented
