Abstract
In current handoff techniques in mobile wireless ATM networks the route is optimized only after the handoff is completed. Therefore the current handoff techniques do not optimize the usage of network resources and time the network resources are reserved while finding an optimal route. We propose a uniform policy, labeled Switch Selected and Initiated Handoff (SSIH), in which the switch initiates the handoff for the optimization of network resource use during handoff and the time the network resources are reserved in excess of the optimal handoff route. In SSIH the switch greedily selects the handoff technique which will be best suited for that case utilizing the route information of the call and the location of the mobile hosts at the time of handoff. Thus, the route is determined optimally
