Abstract
An adaptive spatial filtering for images is presented with application to postprocessing of block coding images. The main purpose is to reduce the degradation in decoded images caused by block coding with no increase in the bit-rate of coding. The filter design is based on some prior knowledge about image edges, D. Marr and E. Hildreth´s vision model (1980) and the optimal approximation theory. The experiment shows that the filter is satisfactory, simple, and easy for hardware implementation. It can be applied to all kinds of images encoded by block coding methods
