  • Abstract
Scientific research nowadays is moving from an independent and single-disciplinary ideal towards a collective effort combining diverse actors and capabilities. This study uses network analysis and mapping technology to explore the characteristics of research collaboration in the academic community of Taiwan. We construct large-scale networks using empirical data representing research partnerships formed through national research program. With the application of software tools we also explore and visibly depict the intensity and dynamics of these research networks. The main aims of our analysis are: (1) to reveal different patterns of networking relationships among academic researchers; (2) to understand the mutual interaction of knowledge production and dissemination across different research disciplines; and (3) to analyze the role and the characteristics of important researchers and their research groups. Through the study we demonstrate the feasibility and potential of social network analysis. The results could be used to understand intra- and inter-discipline networks and to foster a research environment that collaboration is encouraged and supported.
