Abstract :
The breakdown voltage characteristics of N2-SF6 gas mixtures in a nonuniform field are presented for AC, lightning impulse and switching impulse voltage with positive and negative polarity. Four protrusions with different lengths and shapes opposite a plane were investigated. The gas pressure of N2-SF 6 mixtures from 1% to 20% SF6 was chosen by calculation and experiments in order to get the same dielectric strength without protrusions as for pure SF6 with 0.5 MPa. The results of the investigations show the defect sensibility of the N2-SF6 mixtures in comparison with pure SF6 , depending on the applied voltage and the defect type. First conclusions concerning the discharge development are drawn
