Abstract
We aim to clarify the operating characteristics of key-type, trackball-type and gyroscope-type pointing devices for television operation via a graphical user interface (GUI). First, we examined whether the operating characteristics of the three types of pointing device depended on the viewing distance. The results showed that the operating characteristics of the three kinds of pointing device did not depend on viewing distance. Next, we compared the operating characteristics of the pointing devices in two tasks: when the distance to the target was long, and when it was short. The results suggested that the gyroscope type was easier to operate than the other two types, judging from the relation between the gain and the pointing time
