Abstract :
Mobile multimedia service is a hottest topic in communications science today. However, realistic realization and mass acceptance of this service requires networking architectures with acceptable quality of service (QoS) and attractive tariffs. A novel strategy for this is maximum reuse of well accepted data networking standards and their infrastructure. The first part of this article reviews DECT and Mobile IP. We then describe three Mobile IP based implementation-oriented DECT network architectures to support IMT-2000 applications. Implementing Mobile IP in addition to conventional IP allows seamless host roaming, thus boosting QoS in mobile networking. The architectures discussed are DECT/GPRS inter-working, a unicell wireless access to wired LAN, and a multicell DECT network. The architectures introduce two new entities called DSSP and DAP for intercell and intersystem roaming
