Abstract
This paper discusses the importance of multimedia interfaces. Crucial issues in multimedia interface design, such as media combination, synchronisation, coherence and interference, are discussed in detail. Some initial guidelines on multimedia interface design for intelligent systems are given. Although the ideas expressed are partly based on our work in the intelligent systems area (e.g. smart home systems and intelligent traffic management systems), they are likely to be generalisable to wider domains
