Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. As applications based on TCP/IP will become the main method for data communication and multimedia communication, the IP transmission technology becomes more and more important. Methods have developed from the traditional PPP (point-to-point protocol) mode to IP over ATM, IP over SDH/SONET, and IP over DWDM. With applications requiring more and more bandwidth, some technologies which used to apply at the core network have gradually expanded to the access network. New requirements, such as QoS and security, have also been put forward. Consequently, IP transmission technologies have become one of the most topical subjects in the communication field. This paper introduces briefly some of the main emerging technologies, their background, characteristics and application environment, then discusses the characteristics that the new technologies possibly have
