Recent consumer surveys indicate a strong wish for more automation in the home. This requires that home appliances have a communication interface. Which are the functional blocks and how to embed them in the control (micro)system of appliances is the main topic of this paper. An example of integrated circuit that implements the interfacing model is also outlined. The focus is on the power network as communication medium, which is already in place
