Optimization of the reflector width for the conventional ARROW and simplified ARROW (S-ARROW) circular VCSEL structures is studied here, using an effective-index, fiber-mode approximation. We find single-mode behavior is expected over a large region of parameter space, provided loss is introduced into the high-index reflector
