Abstract
Starting from an nonorthogonal expansion of the square wave function that presents no oscillations when it is truncated, the author designs linear phase FIR low-pass filters that can be used in approximate filtering where the idea is either to perform the filtering operation in stages, each stage improving upon the previous one, or to adjust the length of the filter to adapt to changing resources such as time or power, a desirable property in highly integrated mobile devices
