Abstract :
The explosive growth in Internet traffic has created the need to transport ATM over high-speed links. ATM over SONET or directly over fiber is, therefore, being deployed today at least in backbone networks to provide efficient, cost-effective, high-speed transport between fast routers. In this paper, the design and implementation of this technology has been proposed. Unlike many conventional ATM over SONET designs, unique in our design are: ATM or IP traffic directly over fiber, different data rates up to OC-192, more flexible design, and lower system latency. Simulation results demonstrate that our design can support up to OC-192 (9.6 Gb/s) data rate with negligible system latency, which is very suitable for real-time multimedia over optical fiber applications
