Abstract
Modern display panels are large and thin, and require a high voltage for the lamp. As the market demand for large display screens is increases, inverters needs to be small, high-powered, and very efficient. The backlight inverter used in a laptop computer is investigated in this paper. It has been difficult for the electromagnetic transformer in the inverter to obtain a high efficiency and compact profile. In this study, a piezoelectric transformer (PT) is used and it is shown that it reduces the loss and volume compared to the standard electromagnetic transformer. The results of the comparison with input-output and brightness-efficiency characteristics show the possibilities of lower profile and high efficiency in backlight inverters
