  • Abstract
Power control coupled with user matching can improve the spectrum efficiency in channelized cellular systems. A power control policy must balance the reduction in interference realized with lower transmit-power levels with the reduction in serving signal, which can be done successfully through user matching. When applied indiscriminately, power control can exacerbate the near-far-end problem. We present a power control policy that does not do so, and describe a distributed algorithm for user matching that is easy to implement. The proposed technique can be combined with either fixed or dynamic channel/bandwidth allocation algorithms and applies to both circuit-based and packet-based traffic. Though it can be used with mobile users, it is ideal for fixed and slow-moving terminals
