Abstract
This paper proposes a novel scheme “jam-packing” that efficiently supports transfer of huge files with bounded delivery time. The key observation is that for a large class of huge file transfer applications, the performance index of interest is the delivery time of the entire file while the delay and delay jitter requirements for individual packets are less important. By relaxing the performance requirements of individual packets, it is possible to significantly improve the statistical multiplexing gain and the network utilization while still guaranteeing the delivery time for huge file transfers. In this paper, we describe the call admission control and packet scheduling algorithms that support the service, and simulation results that demonstrate the advantages of the scheme
