Abstract :
Though the actual contribution of SF6 to global warming is negligible, the control of SF6 emissions seems to be nevertheless imperative. Actually, it is listed in the Kyoto Protocol and consequently emissions should be duly reported. Also, the electrical industry, which is now the major user of this gas (>50% of total SF 6 production), must be able to show that it is possible to use this gas and at the same time preserve the environment. It can be achieved because it is exclusively used in closed or sealed systems and because of the awareness of all the actors involved, from production to final destruction, insuring thus limited loss during the life of the products. Last but not least, induced benefits on other criteria, even environmental ones, can balance by far this negative impact. This paper discusses the control of SF6 emissions throughout the industrial process and various stages of the product´s life. The environmentally friendly aspects of SF6 technology are outlined including the results of environmental studies conducted on MV SF6 switchgear
