            Abstract :
The functional technical requirements of substations are not affected by the cost pressure changes of electricity markets. The high level function of a substation is still to connect different networks and to provide the transfer of electrical energy inside and between networks with a certain availability. However, it is not defined in detail how the technical realisation of this function looks like in terms of e.g. substation configuration or technology used. The choice of a functionally optimised technical system that does not cling to traditional detailed specification is therefore a second possibility for reducing costs. Because of these two possibilities an optimisation of the complete technical system and a complete process optimisation are the basis of ABB´s new substation concept for liberalised markets: PS-1
