Abstract
We present an excitation controller for the well-known third order single generator infinite bus model, which is derived using a new energy shaping methodology that emphasizes the interconnection and damping structures of the system. Our main contribution is the proof that a suitably tuned linear state feedback significantly enlarges the domain of attraction of the operating equilibrium, pushing the unstable equilibrium outside the operating region. Instrumental for the establishment of this result are the introduction of a virtual coupling between the electrical and the mechanical dynamics and the derivation of a new Lyapunov function
