Abstract
The purpose of this book authored by Robert Gordon, is to provide engineers engaged in the functional design of freeway ITS with the background and tools to develop and scale all the necessary core systems. The major contribution of this book is to provide guidelines on functional design for a number topics including: 1) Rapid detection of incidents in freeways and information provision to all drivers including motorists as well, 2) Access control to the freeway mainline and effective use of lanes (e.g. improving lane allocations during normal traffic conditions and freeway throughput) and 3) Information management to support a broad array of transportation needs, including transit, optimization of passenger throughput in transportation corridors, and traffic management to support responses to emergencies and evacuations. Intelligent Freeway Transportation Systems: Functional Design contains 11 chapters. Intelligent Freeway Transportation Systems: Functional Design is a very good and comprehensive book, as it covers the very important issues a transport engineer has to deal with, during ITS functional design.
