Abstract
SO MY name is Carter, and I live with my dad and my mum in a town full of physicists. I made that up in English; it\´s called alliteration. Although ph wasn\´t supposed to be f, because it\´s Greek, and it was more like puh for a really long time. My dad says we\´re like the Greeks, because there\´s only a few thousand of us living on the edge of the civilised world, and we keep the light of knowledge burning. You know when the Ancient Greeks got totally bossed by the Roman armies? Well, it didn\´t mean that the Greeks stopped being smart and inventing things like zero. It just meant they had to keep it quiet. And Dad says our job is to save mankind, quietly. But you can\´t say this too much when you leave town, Dad says, because when people hear you\´re from Los Alamos the first thing they say is "Gee, are you still working on the Manhattan Project?" And the second thing is "Oh my God, how do you live with yourself ?"
