  • Abstract
    In photonic network-on-chips (PNoC), it is very important to improve the utilization of photonic resources. This paper is the first one that extends the software-defined networking (SDN) concept to photonic NoC design. Based on the principle of a centralized control plane separated from the network forwarding or switching plane, we propose a Software-defined photonic network-on-chip (SD-PNoC) architecture. Then, we present the detailed communication protocol and the microar-chitecture of central controller. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for designing SDN-based PNoC is discussed.
