Abstract :
Quadrature oscillators obtained by superharmonic coupling are known for its good phase noise performance. By making use of the presence of a second harmonic in the common-mode node of an Class D LC oscillator it is possible to design a 2.4 GHz quadrature oscillator using an inverting on-chip transformer. Simulation results in a circuit prototype in 130 nm CMOS technology show that it is possible to lower Vdd down to 0.4 V and power consumption to only 1.92 mW, achieving a FoM of 186.9 dBc/Hz, with a Phase Noise of -137.2 dBc/Hz at the 5 MHz offset, when operating at 2.4 GHz.
