Abstract
The increasing demand coverage by wind power is posing new challenges to the operation of power systems. In this paper the effect on secondary reserve necessary to overcome the added uncertainty is analyzed. Maximum wind power demand coverage, limited by the secondary reserve value requirement, is assessed. The Spanish power system is used for numerical application using real data. Maximum demand coverage of around 60%-80% is possible without compromising secondary reserve value. An increase of 70%-200% in secondary reserve is expected for a demand coverage of around 60%. Some dynamic performance considerations on the secondary regulation are given for the Spanish case.
