Current commercial applications of semiconductor optical amplifiers

SOAs seem to have finally found their niche. We will review the applications in which semiconductor optical amplifiers are presently used, and will go into the characteristics that make the devices distinctively suited for these purposes. We notice that the modern uses of SOAs are not limited to optical networking, but can also be found in fields as diverse as medical diagnostics and sensing.
