Abstract :
In this paper, hybrid switching is explored in a modularly designed Data Vortex optical interconnection network. The hybrid operation permits circuits to be established and switched for better quality of service (QoS) within a packet switched network. The modular design facilitates large-scale system implementations. The proposed routing modes introduce a small penalty in a low packet drop rate, while the circuits guarantee delivery with QoS. In addition, conflict resolution among multiple circuits is proposed for fair share of the resources. The simulation study includes the routing performance, penalty in packet drop rate and circuit delay time in the case of conflict. The results demonstrate very promising overall network performance if the network resource is properly managed between packet and circuit traffic. The hybrid mode provides versatility and allows for easy adaption to different application needs.
