Abstract :
This study investigates the general framework of the decisions in in-plant milk run systems, and also the other related decisions that affect or affected by milk run systems. Emphasis was placed on lean-oriented decisions and objectives. This was accomplished conceptually using extensive literature review. The study shows that there is a lack of studies regarding in-plant milk run system as a whole, and also in certain areas of the system such as manual feeding. The study shows also a tendency in some studies to deviate from lean manufacturing philosophy looking for optimality based on restrictive objectives. Furthermore, some differences in literature in defining some concepts related to in-plant milk run system were illustrated. The study presents new directions for future research especially those related to fast-response delivery in very changing environments.
