Abstract
In this paper, the problem of energy efficient adaptive modulation and coding in conjunction with flexible bandwidth allocation is investigated. Numerical results in European core optical network show that energy efficiency of the flexible architecture can outperform the fixed one by a factor of 1.2 for low and 1.4 for high traffic demands, respectively.
