Abstract :
This paper presents problems relating to the accurate modelling and simulation of the thermal behaviour of machine tools, and the state of research in this field. Sources of errors, the behaviour of errors and interactions are discussed. Assumptions for the holistic modelling of the properties of HSC, heavy duty and precision machine tools are presented. The basic structure of the open, intelligent in-house computing system (SATO2) is described. Examples of the use of the system for the simulation of complex spindle axes with high dynamic movements and high torque loads are provided. Directions for future research on this subject are indicated.
