Abstract
The use of a penalty function method (PFM) for reducing weight jitter in adaptive array processing is discussed. The method is shown, in some situations, to be equivalent to diagonal loading. By means of simulation, however, it is shown that diagonal loading can adversely affect the SNIR performance of arrays disproportionately when weak mainbeam jammers are present, but that these effects can be greatly reduced if the full flexibility of the PFM is used
