Abstract :
In view of future deployments of optical fiber transmission systems by NTT, a maintenance system for optical fiber cables is required. The authors propose a basic structure for the maintenance systems. First, future technical problems for optical fiber maintenance are described by referring to existing metallic cable troubles. Then, an optical fiber maintenance systems scheme and philosophies for maintenance technologies are discussed. In addition, recent studies of optical fiber deterioration are presented for the diagnostic systems
