    Summary form only given, as follows. A diagnostic for velocity space diffusion of Ar II ions is being developed using a diode laser based instrument which is more compact, and more simple to operate than the conventional diode laser based system. Ion velocity distribution functions are obtained in a low temperature thermionic Ar discharge plasma (10/sup 7/< n/sub e/<10/sup 10/ cm/sup -3/, 1\n\n\t\t
