Abstract :
The cell loss probability in an ATM multiplexer is an important performance measure needed for network design and management. However, its calculation often encounters computational difficulties due to the large size of the analytical model required to compute it. In this paper, we apply rational approximation to the evaluation of the loss probabilities in ATM multiplexers. We consider a multiplexer fed by a population of on-off sources where the aggregate performance is of concern. Numerical results suggest that the rational approximation approach could be useful in many applications in ATM networks
