Abstract :
The aim of this project was the design and development of a nationwide facility to handle and manipulate cardiac images in combination with other relevant patient data for the medical research environment. The infrastructure used is based on CADANS, a nationwide low-speed TCP/IP network operating between the 8 university hospitals in the Netherlands. The DICOM protocol has been chosen to standardize the communication between different locations. Investigations were carried out to evaluate the effects of lossy data-compression techniques on transmission speed and image quality. A prototype viewing station, based on a graphical user interface, was developed featuring several tools to handle and manipulate the images on screen.<>
