Abstract :
Some general features of bioluminescence that make it useful as a biochemical transducer and specific applications derived from beetle luciferases are presented. The use of beetle luciferases to detect minute concentrations of adenosine triphosphate and metabolically related compounds and to monitor the activity of genes in living organisms is described. The recent introduction of beetle luciferases that emit different colors of light is discussed
