Abstract :
The problem of selecting a switching fabric for broadband ISDN from a group of fabrics is investigated. Five switching fabrics are considered as candidate solutions for the selection problem, namely, the delta, the dilated delta, the replicated delta, the backward delta, and the augmented shuffle exchange networks. Each of these fabrics is evaluated for five properties: the throughput, the probability of blocking, the delay, the hardware complexity, and the fault tolerance. The switching fabric selection problem modeled as a constrained multiple attribute selection problem and a selection methodology are developed. A knowledge-based system is described that utilizes the selection methodology
