Abstract :
During 1992, a thermal power plant in Montevideo burnt in an accident, which caused great damage in Turbine Number Five (88 MVA) and Number Six (156 MVA). The worst damage took place in Turbine 6, Turbine 5 was only affected by the smoke resultant of burning cables. During the repair of Unit 5, one of the most important tasks was to change the retaining rings of the generator rotor. When we took out the rotor and the old retaining rings, we inspected both stators and rotors, finding a lot of problems. This paper deals with the description of all the tasks done and how we managed to repair the generator of Unit 5, which is a critical backup for Montevideo´s electric system
