Abstract
This paper describes an adaptive data/voice communication sensor system for longitudinal and lateral vehicle control. The new sensor incorporates mechanisms for achieving cooperation between independent vehicles as well as within platoons of heterogenous automotive vehicles operating in freeway traffic. The cooperative retroreflective data/voice communication sensor system is capable of providing all the data necessary for increasing safety of driving, reducing the occurrence of rear end collisions and increasing highway throughput
