Abstract :
It is recognized that developing a formalism for content-based multimedia systems is essential for developing sufficiently reliable and mission critical applications. The paper tries to formalize the whole paradigm of content-based multimedia retrieval. The formalism will provide a generic criterion for system evaluation, and methods to customize the system engine to applications. It is believed that this formalism adds semantics to multimedia systems and leads the database technology from tool level into application level
